Hearing rain approach

Hearing rain approach
while reading in bed at night;
Morobe Province

BY MICHAEL DOM

I heard an ensemble stir and strain,
rising over crowded mountains and valleys
in palpable waves through the shadow of night;
aimed inland by Solomon’s regal baton.

Those errant winds refreshed their compositions
at that heavenly percussionists outpouring,
every tree, every shrub waving leaves in applause;
even my roof provideed a thunderous encore.

Set adrift on my bed in the magnificent flood,
amid nocturnal choruses of crickets, katydids and toads,
behind each sublime sonata, a simpler melody flows;
a symphony of paradise restores me once more.
