Sherlock Holmes in the place of the great masalai - Pt 3

PETER KRANZ

Basil Rathbone as Holmes"WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE?" muttered Dr Watson in a post-prandial drowse.

Holmes and the good doctor were relaxing on the verandah of a grand colonial plantation house at the base of Hornbrum's Bluff, far enough away from the hustle and humidity of Port Moresby to provide a relaxing interlude for Holmes to ponder this case.

He knew Moriarty was involved somehow in the latest atrocities in the Islands, but he couldn't quite put his finger on the connection.

Doctor Who had kindly dropped them off on his way to Beta Pictoris b where there had been an unpleasant incident with a giant red leech and an inter-galactic Sumatran rat of uncommon size.

"Watson, that is a remarkable geological feature we see before us, and the river makes a pleasant sound bubbling as it rounds that bend. Altogether a thoroughly romantic scene," said Holmes acting somewhat out of character, and missing his usual after-dinner clay pipe and his favourite black shag (a type of tobacco - Author).

"You might try a few casts with your rod good fellow, though I doubt if your old adversary Salmo salar will make his presence felt in this tropical paradise."

But Watson had dozed off.

His peace was rudely interrupted by the sound of a motorcycle spluttering up the road.

"Bah, bah humbug. Great suffering saints and masalai, what an earth is that infernal noise?" complained Watson.

"Watson, if I'm not mistaken, it's a Daimler-Maybach Reitwagen. And driven by a female acquaintance of ours who has not had time to be appropriately attired, and is waving a message from Military Intelligence."

"Holmes - how can you know all that?"

"Because she stands before us."

It was Kinatoea.

And she was indeed riding a Reitwagen - the only one in the colonial territories.

"Well that really is a Right old Wagon if you ask me."

"Come now Watson, it is a masterpiece of German engineering. It utilises an internal combustion engine!"

"Well thank God someone appreciates the damn thing."

Kinatoea gasped for breath.  "Mr Holmes, at last I have found you!"

"This is of the utmost urgency! Our antipodean cousins have been covertly intercepting telegraphic messages, and they thought you might be interested in this!"

Holmes grasped the somewhat dusty communication from Kinatoea's trembling hands and read avidly.

He jumped as if the grip of a paroxysm, and in his excitement ejaculated "We have him Watson!  Here is the evidence. It seems the sons of Felix Australis have not been conducting their eavesdropping in vain."

"I say Holmes, that's coming on a bit strong even for you."

"Watson - it says 'To JM from SM (that's to James Moriaty from Sebastian Moran). Top secret, for your eyes only. Stop. Bomb planted and ready to be used. Stop. Location as agreed. Expect maximum destruction of British and colonial interests. Location 43 6f 6c 6f 6e 69 61 6c 20 61 64 6d 69 6e 69 73 74 72 61 74 69 76 65 20 68 65 61 64 71 75 61 72 74 65 72 73 20  Stop. Awaiting further instructions."

The end-game was afoot!

Ah - Moriarty, the Napoleon of crime. Not only had he masterminded the greatest criminal network in Europe, he sought to extend his evil tentacles to the far reaches of the empire.

Wherever there was suffering and exploitation, he was there. Wherever there was opportunity and weakness he was ready to make the most.

Corruption was his name and ill-gotten profit was his game. He was the master of graft, terror and evil.

He is a man of good birth and excellent education, endowed by nature with a phenomenal mathematical faculty. At the age of twenty-one he wrote a treatise upon the binomial theorem which has had a European vogue.

On the strength of it, he won the mathematical chair at one of the smaller provincial universities, and had, to all appearances, a most brilliant career before him.

But the man had hereditary tendencies of the most diabolical kind. A criminal strain ran in his blood, which, instead of being modified, was increased and rendered infinitely more dangerous by his extraordinary mental powers.

But he was to meet with his nemesis in Papua and New Guinea- Holmes, Watson and Daa!

Should be Part 3 methinks.
