Star Mountains boys take up 6-year study program in Australia

IT’S THE beginning of an exciting journey for two promising young boys from the remote Star Mountains of Western Province who have been offered a golden opportunity to make their education dreams come true.
Through the Ok Tedi Community Education Program, Cyril Bineng and Oscar Nori, both aged 13, will be taking up a six-year study program at the Scots College in Sydney.
The program was established last year through an agreement between Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML), Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF) Limited and The Scots College.
The agreement seeks to assist bright young children of the Star Mountains enrich their education in Australia and is strongly supported by the mine landowner villages as well as the Mineral Resources Star Mountains. A total of K2 million was contributed by the Landowners Royalty Investment Trust and MRSM towards the program last year.
Thirty-five applications were received from various primary schools in the mine village areas. Cyril Bineng (Tabubil Primary) and Oscar Nori (Tabubil Christian) were chosen on merit.
The boys flew out of Tabubil last Friday accompanied by OTML Community Development Training Officer, James Yore.
