Revisiting Russell Soaba’s first & timeless novel ‘Wanpis’

This is my land

This is my landILANGIN SANGKOL

This is my land
of Valleys and plains and rugged terrain
crystal clear creaks and coral reefs
The land of the beauty and of the beasts

The land of my fathers and love of my mothers
Home to generations of history revealed yet some untold
Relics of the war exposed to many
For the youth to know that World War II was here

And that very brave man fought very near
Now we can raise our head up high
And sing from the top of Independence hill
O’ arise all ye sons and daughters of this land

Let us not forget, that this is our land,
Our home, where we are born and we are bred
Where the white stars of the Southern Cross shine against the black
And the yellow bird of paradise flies in the red

Brings back the warm of a heart full smile and the pride back to you and I
From the mountains to the seas
As popular as it seems;

We know the East New Britain as Tolais
The Bougainville as Kawas
The Manus as Chauka
New Island as Nilpis

West New Britain as Bilas peles
Sepiks as Wara
Eastern Highlands as Apo
Western Highlands as Kange

Southern Highlands as Naiko
Northern Province as Oro Kaiva
Morobe Province as Sonag
Whilst the Milne Bay are known for their tapioka dance

The Western Province known as the place of barramundi
The Gulf Province where there is sago or poi
And the lakatoi being the icon of the Nation’s City

Yes this is my land, my home not a dream
A mixture of all cultures and blend of all styles
With a population of 7.3 million last counted
Yet 800 languages diversify us all

But tok pisin brings us together
Where we can speak and be heard
As united we stand
One people, One nation, One Country

Yes this is my land
Where I will live and I will die
The land of treasure and of fortune
The land of adventure and terror

The land of the unexpected must be respected
The land of my fathers and love of my mother
The land of the beauty and of the beast
