How to succeed in the Crocodile Prize: tips from the top
25 November 2014
THE Crocodile Prize writing season – which lasts until Tuesday 30 June next year – began yesterday.
There are six different writing contests – covering stories, poetry and essays - and one contest for illustration.
The other award is for a lifetime contribution to PNG literature.
If you enjoy writing, then there’s certainly something for you in Papua New Guinea’s literary awards.
The prizes are great too. First prize in each category includes a K5,000 cash prize, guaranteed publication of the winning work, a wonderful Crocodile trophy to keep and, this year, free travel and accommodation to the two-day Crocodile Prize awards event in Kundiawa.
So how can you write a winning entry?
Step 1 – Read good PNG writing
The best way to do this is to buy a copy of the Crocodile Prize Anthology from Amazon (here’s the link).
It’s reasonably priced and contains the best writing submitted to this year’s Prize.
It will give you a clear idea of the current standard of writing in PNG today.
Step 2 – Read the entry requirements
Make sure you know what you need to do to submit an entry that conforms with the rules of the contest.
For each of the contests there is a short description of what you need to do and you can read the entry requirements here.
Step 3 – Make sure your entries are worthy
If the choice is to write another piece or extensively revise something you’ve already written, take the second route. Quality will always triumph over quantity in the Crocodile Prize.
Step 4 – Remember to send us an entry form
This year we have an online entry form and your entries will not be accepted for consideration unless the entry form is submitted.
You need only send in one form to cover all your entries.
Step 5 – Revisit the website frequently
All important information about the Crocodile Prize is published on the website.
It is a ‘live’ site which is updated many times each week. So keep up with it.
