Telling tales - challenges and opportunities for reporting PNG
Dame Carol Kidu on why things are tougher for PNG’s women

Icon of peace

Mahatma GandhiJIMMY AWAGL

An entry in the Rivers Prize for
Writing on Peace & Harmony

Where there is conflict and war,
There is no peace,
Where there is discrimination and inequality
There is no harmony
A majority hates injustice and racism
A minority loves them
But peace icons walk the talk

An ant disputed the cock
Used heavenly arrows and earthly spears
Fought the storm of colonialism
Shattered the bricks of imperialism
Not with nuclear weapons
Blood flows that is not obvious to the eyes
But by wisdom

As the non-violent,
Battle injustice peacefully,
No bloodshed, no death,
No life sacrificed, yet peace prevails,
The power within the lion’s heart,
Is the value of discipline and truth
His nation gained independence

Martin-luther-kingA sheep encountered the lion
Opposed prejudice,
Values equality and rights,
He walked the streets,
Of the world superpowers,
With dreams in mind,
Spoken in word,

The seed he planted prospered
But the plant did not,
Live to embrace the fruit,
Of its labour,
Nevertheless he laboured for others
The pity he died in tragic death,
By the hands of the cock

Displayed in actions,
Results after results,
Great nation,
Great people,
He said,
“I have a dream” for
Americans

A pigeon confronted the fox
For peace, equality and harmony,
Not only of the soul,
But the flesh,
He was captured,
Interrogated and isolated,
For harmony he was exiled,

Nelson MandelaTo no mans’ island,
Afflicted yet backed up,
Never quit, never compromise,
Never guilty, never regret,
Persistently he fought,
Likes an archerman firing arrows,
Of justice and peace,

Hero he became,
Changed the mindsets of,
Whites and blacks united,
Eat at one table,
Mortal man gone said,
“I greet you in the name of peace”
The legacy lives on.

Thanks bro, here in PNG we are finding it very hard to identify a true icon of peace.

We do not walk the talk for peace. Actions are contrary to words and peace does not reign.

Bro Jimmy, Surely a beautiful piece, with the true icons...love it.
