THIS past week, Zenzeng Tore Bofirie Mari from remote Balangko village in Finschhafen was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to education and to the University of Goroka.
Some months ago, I shared two articles on Zenzeng. The first was my personal tribute in the form of a poem and the second was a profile of his 38 years of educating Papua New Guineans, two years at Sogeri National High School and 36 years at the University of Goroka.
What amazed me following his inclusion in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours list was the wild outpouring of commendation from colleagues.
Zenzeng now becomes an icon of service and loyalty at our hilltop university. A situation that warrants us nurturing the principles and values that made Zenzeng who he is.
In his own words to his students and young colleagues, Zenzeng said: “If you become a big man or woman later, make me your tea boy.”
Zenzeng’s principles and values are simple. He is a living servant leader. He believes in service to students and colleagues. He has a down to earth way of relating to people. He talks little, listens a great deal, and smiles.
And so this week accolades came from colleagues from all over Papua New Guinea including Bougainville as it anointed a new President.
A senior academic colleague of Zenzeng wrote, “When was the last time a staff (colleague) at UOG received such an honour from the Queen of England? Reckon it’s time for celebrations!”
Another wrote, “Indeed, you are small in stature but big by mind and heart for the people and country. Congratulations on your achievement!”
And Mrs Vetunawa wrote, “You deserved to be thanked and appreciated for the many years of contributions to the people of PNG through the Department of Education and the University of Goroka. Thank you for your tireless efforts, great dedication, and professionalism.”
Our nation salutes Zenzeng Mari for his tireless service to the teaching profession.
Yalkuna Bomai - From what I read earlier about him in your previous article, I would say that he deserved the MBE from the Queen!

Congratulations on your award of MBE. Your achievement has brightened up the people, specifically of low profile Sattelberg people.
I am very proud and pleased to have you shine for our people of Finschhafen and Morobe Province.
You deserve the honour out of your sheer struggle to such a high profile in the education system of PNG to be selected for such an honour. God bless you.
