USA & Papua New Guinea strengthen their defence partnership

THIS past week, representatives from the United States Department of Defense and the United States Embassy met with key Papua New Guinea government and defence force personnel for bilateral defense talks.
The discussions focused on improving US support, assistance, and capacity building for Papua New Guinea’s Defence Force (PNGDF).
PNGDF Commander Brigadier General Gilbert Toropo, American Ambassador Walter North and their respective teams discussed continuing mutual defence agreements, military training opportunities and personnel exchanges.
The talks highlighted PNG and US cooperation priorities and reviewed three successful combined defence exercises during 2015 – Pacific Resilience, Pacific Angel and Pacific Partnership.
Papua New Guinea and the United States have had a long and effective defense relationship.
Together with partners such as Australia and New Zealand, the United States said it is proud to play a role in building the capacity of the PNGDF to respond to domestic and global threats.
