Only a forgiving heart can foster peace and harmony

ROSLYN TONY

for Writing on Peace & Harmony

I was told that only a forgiving heart can foster peace and harmony.
Owe no man anything but to love one another.
For to err is human, to forgive is divine.

But I know that it is not easy to forgive and overcome hatred,
Or smile and take the first step to apologise.
I know that it is not easy to admit error and being laugh at,
Or shoulder a deserved blame and begin over,
I know that it is not easy to profit by mistakes
Or recognize the silver lining.

However, I was told that it takes determination and courage to forgive.
By forgiving I am fashioning my destiny,
For forgiveness is the highest form of love.
And untold happiness will be mine in return.

I was told that forgiveness is the purifying liberation to get healed.
Therefore I am to admit my error honestly and begin over again courageously,
I am to accept advice thankfully and act only after careful thinking,
I am to pay for mistakes I made and apologize when found wrong.
Though these are painful duties I owe myself,
They are duties that pay when put into practice.

I was told that a great mind refrain from replying to an unjust reproach.
And flexibility is a tendency to regain strength after a depression.
Therefore, I am not to judge, but allow another to be a human being.
I am not to be protective, but permit another to face reality.
I am not to cut myself off, but realize that I cannot control another.
I am to admit my powerlessness coz the outcome is not in my hands.

I was told that little and weak men and women cannot forgive.
Therefore, I am to deny my weaknesses and accept them.
I am not to nag, scold, or argue,
Instead I am to search my own shortcomings and correct them.
I am not to control anybody, but make my dream come true.

I am told not to adjust everything to my desires,
But take each day as it comes, and cherish myself.
I am told not to regret the past, but grow and live for the future.

I am told to stop sweating the small stuff, fear less, and love more.
I am told to forgive and forget. The first helps the spirit and the second my liver.
And remember only a forgiving heart can foster peace and harmony.

Ambai, it sounds like a prayer that outlived time. No wonder, you shorten it to a two minutes prayer in the Home-Ec building while I was there last week.
