Port Moresby writers develop strong plans for 2016
23 April 2016
DESPITE the nation being embroiled in so much controversy, a group of new and established writers met on the campus of the University of Papua New Guinea last Saturday.
Among those present were established writers Sil Bolkin and John B Varey as well as Frank Senge Kolma, the veteran PNG journalist, editor and writer, who came with his wife. Short story writer Akilino Powesiu and his wife also attended.
There were also a number of school children, some with their parents.
The members of the organising committee are Tanya Alone, Frank S Kolma, John B Varey, Yombi Kep (a final year journalism student at UPNG), David Kawage Bitno and John K Kamasua.
Work is progressing towards finalising the registration of the Port Moresby Writers Association and planning activities for the remainder of the year.
Since that meeting, a number of commitments to sponsor different categories of a writing competition have come in, including one from Corney and Tanya Alone.
“Great progress so far, keep rolling,” said Corney. “A small family club - Renbo Smile - that my wife Tanya and I are part of will take up the prize sponsorship for the Heritage Writing category. We will await the committee’s decisions before we can fully commit to it.”
John B Varey, a consultant to the Parliamentary reform program, has pledged to sponsor the Leadership Award Category.
An established private security company which has operations in most of PNG’s major towns has shown an interest in sponsoring a Peace and Security Award in the writing competition.
Other potential sponsors have shown interest so the organising committee will formally write to them once a clear process to handle the competition is put in place.
It is anticipated that since the writing competitions will start a bit late, the prizes will be awarded late in 2016 after the Crocodile Prize Awards in September. This also gives an opportunity for members of Port Moresby Writers to participate in the national literary award.
Writers, poets, editors, illustrators, and interested people in Port Moresby can get in touch or register their interest via email to [email protected].

A job well done to John K and your team for giving the writers an opportunity to be recognised and cheered for their work in promoting the art of literacy. Congratulations!

Thank you John Kamasua,
We're with you. You and your esteemed committee members can make this happen.
Interested in capturing the great many authentic stories from her sons and daughters of the great Island of New Guinea - both East and West New Guinea for preservation and education.

Thank you everyone for your compliments. It is a journey that all of us must be part of. It is a great journey of discovery, and personal fullfilment - writing.
And yes Phil. We are proud of Baka and the Croc Prize Team and will get behind him.

Great work John. Good to hear my old friend Frank Kolma is in it. Welcome to the 'Attitude' bro. Also good to hear Corney Alone will sponsor one of the categories - Heritage Writing.
I am slowly advancing towards re-establishing the Enga Writers Association here in Wabag. Will keep posted on progress.

Good stuff John.
I think once you guys get up and running and run in parallel to the Simbu Writer's Association a couple of other provinces will come on line - perhaps Enga and Bougainville.
One thing you could do at this stage is give Baka a hand.
The 2016 Crocodile Prize awards might be a bit late this year, maybe in December.

Great initiative. Keep up your good work. PNG needs you.
An Annual Writer's Festival would be another idea for you to think about. We have one in Sydney and it is very popular.
