BUKA - Bougainvilleans are being urged to remain vigilant and to comply with state of emergency orders in light of the growing concerns over the Covid-19 pandemic which has already hit Port Moresby.
Former Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) president James Tanis has urged Bougainvilleans throughout PNG to adhere to restrictions to mitigate the spread of the virus.
“In the event of an increase in the number of reported cases there may be unnecessary panic by the general public, but I ask you all to remain steadfast and to keep calm,” said Mr Tanis, who is on the campaign trail vying for the ABG presidency in this year’s general elections.
“The state of emergency clearly outlines the protocols we all must follow to avoid contracting this deadly virus.
“For us in Bougainville it is no different, we must follow these measures to safeguard ourselves and protect our children, our families and our people.
“I also want you all to maintain a demeanor of optimism.
“My people of Bougainville will get through this pandemic. We are a resilient people who have faced adversity and prevailed time and time again and by the grace of God we will rise above this together as we have done so many times over,” Mr Tanis said.
Mr Tanis said that most of the communities candidates are reaching out to are rural and have little or no access to proper information on the pandemic.
He encouraged all candidates in the election to lead by example and take time to educate the people about the Covid-19 pandemic.
