Toroama surfs towards presidency in Bougainville

Toroama continues his surge in Bougainville

The longer the count continues, the further ahead moves Ishmael Toroama, who seems to have the Bougainville presidency in his keeping

NOOSA – After the eighteenth elimination count in the Bougainville presidential election, the leading candidate Ishmael Toroama has surged even further ahead of the field.

With the elimination of Wesma Piika and Sione Paasia this morning and the pending elimination of former Bougainville Revolutionary Army commander Sam Kauona, Toroama is now more than 13,000 votes ahead of the second-placed candidate Fr Simon Dumarinu.

Dumarinu himself has widened the gap to 9,000 over the next group of candidates – Tsiamalili, Raivet, and Semoso.

Currently the number for an absolute majority is 67,489 votes but it seems preferences will be exhausted well before this figure is reached and that Ishmael Toroama will be the last man standing.

There were a few changes in the positions of the top 10 candidates, the main one being Peter Tsiamalili who has now moved into third place.

Progressive results after the eighteenth elimination count this morning are:

Ishmael Toroama – 39,081
Simon Dumarinu – 25,863
Peter Tsiamalili – 16,637
Thomas Raivet – 16,326
Fidelis Semoso – 15,507
Joe Lera – 11,055
James Tanis – 10,507
Samuel Kauona – 9,240
