Convenor of famed Pacific lunch dies at 85
When orthodoxy seeks to strangle dissent

Grand Chief of Papua New Guinea

Michael somare at the unSTEPHANIE ALOIS

Born in the 1930’s
The world experiencing great depression
A famine in Russia killing millions
A great war was coming our way
Papua New Guinea a colony
Conquered, colonised, confused

He was a teacher
Then politician
Who did everything in his power
To speak for a hopeful country
A nation yet to be born

Fearless and brutally honest
He struggled for independence
Many called him bighead
But he did not mind
Speaking loud for colonisers to hear
Determined for a people to be free

A powerful political leader
Adored husband, father and friend
A man of high moral principle,
Upholding Melanesian values
Honouring his Christian faith,
Humble and calm in crisis

He saw the needs of the people
He saw the riches they should enjoy
He understood public service
He embraced democracy
He gave his best to this country
He departed this 26th of February

Our Sana is gone
But not the hope he gave us
A million thankyous never enough
Let the children of this nation
Cherish you as a man of vision
Grand Chief of Papua New Guinea.
