God Rested On Sunday
31 August 2021
The Earth is getting warmer
Sea levels are rising
It’s happening now, as you read this
And it will continue as we continue
to argue, “by how much”
For the future of humanity
it’s a question of survival
I’ve been to this island ever since a lad
I still come out here today
We walk, swim, walk, fish and rest
Many birds nest and rest here too
It is so beautiful and alive with trees
we may be forgiven for thinking
it remains the same
It’s all too easy, in this fast-paced age,
to become indifferent and not to notice
how our action, inaction or ignorance
contributes to the demise of our planet
In my time, the island’s beaches eroded,
many beach trees felled and corals bleached.
Turtles don’t lay eggs here any more
I wanted to write this
and leave a statement
If the island is destroyed
beyond recognition
I know I left these words behind
for future generations to read
and either feel good or bad about us
