The late Benson Kavia Garui and Governor Gary Juffa - "a hard-working, honest and genuine leader"

GARY JUFFA MP

ORO - It is with great sadness that I convey news of the passing on 19 October of Hon Benson Kavia Garui, an Oro leader and member of the Afore local level government.

Benson died in Popondetta General Hospital after a short illness at the age of 65.

Benson was born in 1957 at Tahama village in the Afore area, the third child in a family of four.

In 1969, he was a pioneer student St Itokama Primary School, continuing to the Martyrs Memorial School in 1975, where he completed Grade 10 in 1978.

He had a distinguished political career, serving as an elected member for the Itokama constituency and as Speaker of the Oro Provincial Government Assembly as well as regional member for Oro.

He had a break from public service for several years to return to coffee farming but resumed his political career in 2018 when he was elected to represent Ward 11 in the Afore local level government of which he later was elected president.

He was a member of Oro Provincial Executive Council and vice chair of the Ijivitari District Development Authority.

Benson was a hard-working, honest and genuine leader who cared for his beloved people.

He worked tirelessly to bring services to his people and shall be missed by us all.

The late leader is survived by his wife, Rose, from Kuai village, children Darling and Kerry, and six grandchildren.

Farewell brother, I’ll see you on the other side. May Benson rest in peace.
