PORT MORESBY - Outgoing Malaysian high commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Melvin Cheah Chee Aun, has left the country with one regret: Covid-19 had prevented him from assisting many more Malaysian investors keen to invest in PNG.

In his parting message to international trade and investment minister, Richard Maru, Aun requested him to travel to Malaysia to meet five major Malaysian investors who want to explore investment opportunities in PNG.

Aun stressed that the investors were keen on investing in the agriculture, manufacturing and shipping industries.

“PNG has one of the highest freight rates in the world for domestic trans-shipment of goods and we need more competition to reduce the cost of shipping,” Maru said.

And he assured Aun that he will be in Malaysia in two weeks to meet the Malaysian investors who want to meet with him.

“PNG is not new to Malaysian investors” Maru said. “Malaysia is already the second biggest investor behind Australia.

“We are excited about more investors from Malaysia showing interest to invest in PNG.”
