WEWAK – We recently medevaced a pregnant lady, Imelda, who lives 190 kilometers from Wewak. It had also taken her a day to get to the aid post where we picked her up.
Imelda was and late in the pregnancy, unfortunately the baby died.
I’ll never forget Imelda. She was angry that her husband coordinated with the village health worker to call the floatplane.
She had never been to town and had no desire to get in the floatplane.
I have had to tell countless men to be nice to their wives. However, Imelda was the first lady I had to ask to stop punching her husband.
Upon being admitted to the hospital, the doctors told Imelda she needed a blood transfusion.
In Papua New Guinea, if you need blood from the blood bank, you need to resupply the blood bank.
Normally, this means your family needs to come to town on your behalf and give blood before the hospital will approve surgery.
Since it would take up to seven days for her family to travel to Wewak to give blood, in their place several missionary women went to the hospital and gave their blood.
A few days later, Imelda went in to surgery.
The month before the surgery, Imelda had to keep the baby that had already passed away in her womb.
This was all going on while she was dealing with the physical pain and grieving over her lost child.
Imelda's journey was filled with hardship and loss, but through it all, she encountered God's love. In the midst of her pain, she found hope and healing, both physically and spiritually.
